Great news for the neighborhood--the Sons of Haiti Lodge food cart renovation project was completed in March and five food carts are now operating at the "Historic Mississippi Gateway Food Carts" pod at the intersection of Mississippi and Fremont.
This is a story about stopping the displacement of another African-American cultural institution in the Boise neighborhood. Four years of code violation fines assessed by the City of Portland on the former cart lot totaled over $45,000 and threatened the Lodge's existence.
Lodge members turned to the BNA for help and neighbors and area businesses quickly came together to develop and fund a project in compliance with city code. The Portland Development Commissionstepped in with a catalyzing project grant which assured the project would happen. With the project completed the City rescinded all the fines.
A Grand Opening celebration will be held Saturday June 4th, 4:30-6pm (ribbon cutting at 5:15pm) with music, beer, cake and of course food available from the five carts: King Burrito, Tito's, Habibi, E-San Thai Cuisine and Lucky Clover.
